Nizhny Novgorod Research and Design Institute on Petroleum Refining was created in 1951 in connection with commencement of construction of one of the largest at that time Refineries in Europe, in the Nizhny Novgorod region. In 1994 as a result of corporization, the Institute was reorganized into the open type joint-stock company OJSC «Nizhegorogniinefteproyect», and at present forms part of the Oil Company OJSC «LUKOIL» as its branch.
During 55 years of research and design activity on the basis of projects elaborated by the Institute many refineries and separate process units were constructed and successfully operated both in the territory of the former URSS and abroad.
In 1960-1990, the Institute was one of the leading engineering organizations for design development of Refineries in the countries of Eastern Europe (Hungary, Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia) and also in India, Turkey, Viet-Nam and Cuba.

The achievements of OJSC «Nizhegorodniinefteproyect» have been marked by multiple awards. The Institute became a laureate of the prize «Russian National Olympus» in 2006. OJSC «Nizhegorodniinefteproyect» got an international prize «Euro standard» in Strasburg for the outstanding achievements in bringing to conformity of the Russian and European standards in business and social sphere in 2005.
OJSC «Nizhegorodniinefteproyect» three times became a winner of the all-Russian competition «1000 best companies and organizations of Russia», of different international competitions. It was awarded a rank «Leader of business in Povolzhie» in 2004.
